Bookworms, rejoice—your day has come! September 6th is National Read a Book Day, and this is the perfect excuse to curl up with an engaging book. If you’re struggling to decide on what to read, we’ve got you covered. Read on for book recommendations from the Trumark team that you won’t want to put down.
The Fountainhead
If you’ve ever had to sacrifice personal feelings for the good of conventionalism, The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand is the book for you. Recommended by Trumark SoCal Project Manager, Paul Faye, the story follows Howard Roark, a young architect who refuses to conform to what society and his field expect of him. Though he struggles in obscurity, Roark’s journey asks the question—is it better to stand by individualism or conform to collectivism?
Pillars of the Earth
If you’re a fan of historical fiction, Karen Hoover, our SoCal Director of Purchasing, thinks you should try Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The book takes place during the sinking of the White Ship, leaving King Henry I without an heir and causing anarchy between his daughter and his nephew. The novel is divided into 7 sections, including a prologue, and offers a deep look into intrigue, conspiracy, and medieval history.
Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving
Sometimes we take life too seriously, and Celeste Headlee is here to help. Cindy Libbe from our Trumark NorCal team recommends Headlee’s self-help book Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving. This read encourages you to incorporate more fun and leisure into your life. Whether you’re taking a break or doing what you love, Headlee’s approach is designed to help you become a better version of yourself.
Greenlights
If you’re a fan of Matthew McConaughey, you might want to try Greenlights. Dominique La Fouge, Trumark’s Options Purchasing Agent in NorCal, loves this autobiography about falling and getting back up, no matter what life throws at you. He speaks about the importance of constantly creating new goals to achieve, embracing humility and love, and always moving forward, even when the struggles might seem impossible to overcome.
Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys
For anyone raising a boy, Mike McGinn, the Vice President of Land Acquisition for Trumark’s SoCal division, recommends Stephen James and David Thomas’s book, Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys as a must-read. These two child-psychologists, who each have boys of their own, dedicate their lifetime of expertise to discuss the various stages of development. From birth to early adulthood, they focus on how parents can navigate through these phases.
In Cold Blood
With so many people getting drawn into the world of true crime podcasts, you can’t go wrong with a book on the genre. Lydia Corcoran of our Colorado team recommends In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. This book details the 1959 murders of four members of the Clutter Family, whose bodies were found in Holcomb, Kansas. Capote traveled to Kansas to write about the crime, and worked with Harper Lee—author of To Kill a Mockingbird—to conduct interviews for his research.
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
Being creative can be a difficult process, and that’s why Holly Robinson of Trumark Colorado believes you should read Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. Gilbert offers her wisdom and perspective about the subject throughout the book. She speaks about inspiration, and encourages readers to embrace curiosity and reject needless suffering in the pursuit of the “strange jewels” inside of them.
