When Julie and Robert Emmitt were looking for a place to retire after Robert’s 40-year career as a pastor in San Antonio, Texas, they had plenty of choices. With their three kids and seven grandkids scattered across the country, they could go in any direction.
“As we weighed our options, I said I can’t pick a kid, but I can pick a state,” Julie recalls. The choice was between Georgia, California and Colorado.
“We chose Colorado,” she said, where their son, a firefighter, and his family lived in Fort Collins.
The Emmitts looked across Northern Colorado as they considered where to plant their retirement roots, but Julie said they “kept coming back to Pelican Shores,” Julie said.
A unique Trumark Homes community, Pelican Shores at Water Valley is a delightful lakefront village with 59 single-family ranch and two-story detached homes, including a handful of larger lots on the lakefront.
What sealed the deal for the Emmitts was the need for a ranch-style, single-story home to allow for Robert’s recovery from a slip on the stairs that led to surgery, rehab and a temporary bedroom in his downstairs office.
When Robert first visited Pelican Shores, he was greeted by the friendly sales team who were expecting a potential buyer from California to view a home. He called Julie and encouraged her not to delay meeting him there to see it for herself.
“We loved the house and bought it,” said Julie. “It was such a smooth process. We finalized the paperwork and moved in within two weeks, and haven’t looked back,” Julie said, praising the entire Trumark Homes team, from sales to builders to the maintenance crews. “They were all attentive, helpful and just wonderful.”
Julie’s list of things she loves in her home is robust, starting with the view from her front door looking out of the back sliding doors, to the kitchen and laundry room, and the master bedroom and oversized shower. She often watches the sunrise and sunset on the lake from her home.
An added feature is a guest suite at the front of the house. “My 89-year-old father lives with us, it is perfect for him,” Julie said. “He has his own bathroom and closet. He is very happy here, too.”
The South Texas couple have also learned the value of an indispensable feature of a Colorado home when the weather turns cold. “I LOVE my fireplace,” Julie says.
By virtue of its location within the master-planned community, it appeals to a wide array of homebuyers, especially empty-nesters desiring a “lock-and-leave” lifestyle.
“Snow removal was unfamiliar to us after our years in Texas, so we are thankful for the community maintenance at Pelican Shores,” she noted. “I’m so fond of the crew, I give them Gatorade on Fridays to thank them for taking such good care of our neighborhood.”
She has also taken up an unexpected new hobby with her six-year-old granddaughter on the lake – fishing. “I had never fished a day in my life, and now I do it every day,” Julie remarked. “My granddaughter even caught a huge, hybrid bass fish larger than her fishing pole!”
Julie warmly recalled she and Robert were greeted with open arms by many friendly neighbors, who are preparing to host their first community Bunco party over the holidays.
“On our first night in our new home, some of our neighbors brought over grilled ribs, salad, cornbread, homemade cookies, plates, napkins, everything we could have needed,” Julie said.
The hospitality continued every few days as they settled into their new home, including a memorable batch of homemade chicken noodle soup. “It is the most welcoming community,” she shared.
As for the community’s moniker, Pelican Shores, Julie marvels at those new neighbors, too.
“It is relaxing to watch them. I have never been around them in my life,” she said. “I can sit outside for hours. I have binoculars, watch them come in and glide.”
