Creating a home interior that reflects your personal style sometimes requires a little character-building, such as adding touches that allow charm and personality to show from every nook and cranny.
A great way to develop your home’s character is to add shiplap, a rustic wood wall paneling. Originally used to insulate ships from harsh weather, adding shiplap to interior walls has become a popular way to add visual interest and dimension to your home. Today, we see shiplap walls in many kinds of design styles – farmhouse, coastal, and even modern. Attempting to install wood paneling may seem daunting, but our friends at Chameleon Design are here to help. Follow the process below, and you’ll have beautiful shiplap walls in your home in no time!
Preparing to Add Shiplap to a Wall
An important first step in a DIY shiplap project is to make sure that you have all the necessary supplies.
- Supply List
- Pre-Sanded ¾-inch Wood Panels
- Measuring Tape
- Pocket Square
- Pencil
- Circular Saw
- Hammer & Nails or Nail Gun
- Level
- Stud Finder
- Wood Putty or Caulk
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Paint Brushes
Once you have everything, determine the layout of your shiplap. To do this, measure the length and height of your wall, and using a pocket square to mark your wood, begin cutting your boards with a circular saw.
Next, you’ll want to determine where the studs are in your walls so you can easily nail your boards. From there, begin your layout from the bottom or the top, making sure your first board is level.
Get Your Shiplap in Ship-shape
Use a hammer and nails or a nail gun to attach your boards together. The nail gun will create divots, which can be easily fixed by filling the holes with caulk or wood putty, and sanding over the area. Once your boards are smooth and hung up on the wall, you can begin painting your shiplap with your favorite natural shade.
