The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, but the truth is, it probably is the busiest as well. It begins with the changing of seasons and progresses into the spooky Halloween festivities and Thanksgiving feast with close family and relatives. Shortly after the traditional turkey dinner, the prepping for the nest celebration eats away at your time as you plan to entertain family from out of town, throw holiday parties and buy gifts during the busiest shopping time of the year. However, if you’re looking for a uniquely different holiday season activity that brings the entire family together and offers an intangible and rewarding experience, these local volunteer opportunities are the perfect options.
Rather than signing a check, which is undoubtedly generous and admirable as well, offering time toward volunteering can be equally, if not, more valuable to many nonprofits and local community outreach centers in need.
Chrysalis is a non-profit organization that strives to provide and service the homeless and low-income individuals with the tools, training, encouragement, and support to launch them back into the job market. Individuals who are inclined to catapult themselves into their careers and independence can work with volunteers who support and assist them in meeting their personal and professional goals. Services offered include class facilitation, assistance with professional resume writing and mock interview practice. You can volunteer together with your spouse or a friend and choose from a variety of weekly, biweekly or monthly opportunities.
For the animal lovers in the family, invest time at the Red Bucket Equine Rescue – a non-profit organization where abused, abandoned and slaughter-bound horses are nurtured, cared for and nursed back to optimal health. A few volunteer opportunities at the ranch include Sunday stall cleaning, ranch care, event planning, horse grooming and feeding, recycling donations, and more. Additionally, the charity hosts an annual Ruby Red Gala with a VIP turbo poker tournament, scotch, and wine tasting, cocktail, and hors-d’oeuvres reception, a dinner celebration, live music events, silent auction and more. Although the gala is sold out for November 2018, hopeful attendees can purchase tickets online for next year in early fall of 2019. You won’t want to miss out on this special night for a charitable cause in your local town!
Mercy House is a support service for homeless individuals, families, and children, as well as those overcoming substance abuse and suffering from physical and mental disabilities. They offer housing, showers, play areas for children, and provide life skill educators that aid individuals to move toward a more self-sufficient life. Volunteers can choose to adopt a family or resident transitioning into Mercy House by compiling a laundry basket with items such as sheets, pillows, cleaning supplies, and household items.
